LOCATION
ITINERARIES
These itineraries were written by the Lifestyle & Lake Marketing Coordinator Thomas Mason who just so happens to be as native to the area as it gets. Born and raised in Lynchburg, VA, Thomas grew up going to the lake ever since he could remember. We hope you enjoy these sample itineraries as much as we enjoyed creating them for you!
ON THE LAKE
WITH THOMAS
I can’t ever remember a time as a kid that we didn’t go to the lake. Some of my best childhood (and plenty of recent) memories have been made here, whether that was just a kayaking and canoeing day trip, or a week long vacation in a rental house. Over the years I’ve discovered different places on the lake, different activities to do, etc. I would consider myself local enough to speak as an authority on this subject, and I’m hoping that these itineraries can not only be helpful to you, but also fun to read.
As a non-married person with very little to tie me down, I have always had a love for adventure and been extremely spontaneous. As an example, one time in my late teens, I woke up one morning during the summer with nothing to do that day, so I did what any sane person would do and decided the morning of to book a flight to the beach. So I did, and it thunder stormed that evening causing the return flight to be cancelled, so I was stuck there for the night. This is an example of spontaneity at it’s finest, and this is the type of lifestyle that I love.
Oddly enough, even though I am very spontaneous, I love planning, especially when it comes to any type of vacation or party. As the reader, with this in mind, I’ll be writing these itineraries as if I’m planning out my own trip to the lake with every consideration that I would have myself.
Throughout the years from my teens to adulthood, I’ve grown to love all kinds of outdoor sports and anything that tastes of thrill. Surfing, snowboarding, wake-boarding, biking, and cliff jumping are just a few of the many things I love to do. It’s my hope that whether or not your state in life is the same or even similar to mine, you can still take something useful from my insights.
The bottom line is this: I love to have the type of fun that puts me in bed with a sunburn, sore muscles, and maybe a scratch or two. If this is you, I’m so stoked to share my itineraries with you!
A WEEKEND ON THE LAKE
WITH THOMAS
INTRODUCTION
One of my favorite terms I like to use is the phrase “spontaneous planning”. Let me give an example of what this means. In January of 2022, I woke up one morning and decided I wanted to go to Puerto Rico. But unlike my spontaneous trip to the beach described on the previous page, this would take a little more planning. So I posted an Instagram story basically saying, “Hey! I’m planning an impulsive trip to Puerto Rico and I’m trying to leave next week. Anyone wanna come?” After receiving multiple responses, I had a small posse of like minded individuals ready to split the cost with me and have a good time. After only a few days of intense research and planning we left on a four-day trip to the beautiful island of Puerto Rico and had a blast in the process.
My point being? Even though this trip took some serious coordinating, it was spontaneous and fun nonetheless. Yet, I think there’s a very important thing one must keep in mind when planning out a vacation: having a plan is crucial, because without one, money and time gets wasted, but the plan is just a fluid thing that changes and shifts with the wind.
Never let the itinerary rule over you like a cruel task master when making decisions on vacation. Rather, let it instead be a wise guru who lives in the mountains that you visit periodically for advice before returning once more to the haven that you’ve constructed for yourself. We’ve all heard of island time; that phenomenon where time speeds up, but life slows down. Ever heard of lake time? You might as well set your watch to it, because you’re on vacation now at Smith Mountain Lake!

THOUGHTS FROM A LOCAL

As mentioned in the previous page, this itinerary is meant to put you in bed tonight with a sunburn and sore muscles. The highlight of being on the lake is simply being in or on the water, whatever form that takes. When I think of a weekend on the lake, I think of young energy, spontaneity, and a group of friends who all love the thrill of adventure. In my mind, it doesn’t get much better than this, and I knew I was doing something right while writing these itineraries because I was getting excited just creating them! These are all things I’ve done before and I hope that you have an incredible time here!

THURSDAY EVENING

7:00PM - Prepare lunch for Friday
It’s always been a tradition for me to take a day trip out on a rental boat with my friends for my birthday, and I always spend the night before cooking for the nine other people I usually take with me. Never underestimate the power of making this seemingly mundane task of meal-prep into a party of its own. Invite some friends over and make an evening of it. Why does the vacation have to start when you arrive at the lake?

FRIDAY

8:30AM - Arrive at Bridgewater Marina
It’s usually a good idea to factor in a solid half-hour for the boat rental process, especially if you don’t have a boaters license since the operator will need to watch a ten-minute long video in order to obtain a temporary license.
Prices at the marina change throughout the season, but generally speaking, it costs around $500/day for a deck boat, plus about $150/day for gas and wakeboard/tube rental. This is a steal, considering that Bridgewater Marina’s entire fleet consists of only brand new boats straight out of production. For the sake of this itinerary, I’ll be going with a two day Friday-Saturday rental of a Starcraft Starstep 221 with a 9am pickup and a 6pm drop-off.

9:00AM-9:15AM - Motor out to Becky's Creek
You made reservations tonight at the Lifestyle & Lake Airbnb, but check-in isn’t until 4 o’clock. That’s okay, there’s plenty to do before then. Bring only what your group needs on the boat with you and lock all your other luggage in the car for later. While you motor out of the marina, be sure to follow all no-wake rules! You’re about to head out to Becky’s creek, a large cove just a few miles south on the west side, and one of the best places on the lake for water sports. Be sure to ask for a map when you rent so that you’re able to navigate your way to the cove.

9:15AM-12:00PM - Wakeboarding/tubing in Becky's Creek
There are two coves directly next to each other called Betty’s Creek and Becky’s Creek. They are both excellent spots for water sports, but Becky’s Creek is my personal favorite because of how spacious it is.

The best thing about spending the morning like this is simply the fact that everyone is having fun. While the boat operator is zipping around the cove pulling a tube or a wakeboard, everyone else in the boat is either tanning on the bow, or just enjoying the feeling of the wind in their hair. One of the best parts about renting from Bridgewater Marina is that all of their boats are equipped with incredibly nice speaker systems. Any time you decide to stop for a break, crank up the bass and take a dive into the water! Just be mindful of noise and remember that sound travels over the water very clearly.

12:00PM - Lunch, relax, and swim
On the map above, there is an island highlighted in red. This is a great convenient place to beach your rental boat and pull out that pre-made lunch that you prepared Thursday night. Be aware that this is a very popular spot for boaters to hang out, so as long as your group is okay with meeting new people this is often the best idea. Otherwise, it can also be super fun to just motor around and find a quiet cove to anchor in and eat right on the boat.

1:00PM-3:00PM - More wakeboarding/tubing
It really goes without saying...after that short lunch break, it’s time to crank up the motor again and start throwing your friends off the tube again! You only have the boat for two days, might as well make the most of it!

3:00PM - Head back to Bridgewater Marina to fuel up
Strategics are always tricky when you have a large group like this. By 4PM, the Airbnb is probably ready for check in, so the best option here is to fuel up the boat at the marina, drop someone off (or a group of people) to drive the car back to the Airbnb, then after the boat is all fueled up, head over with the boat and have everyone meet up at the Airbnb. It’s only about a 15- 20 minute drive from the marina, and a about 15-25 minutes for the boat.

3:45-4:45PM - Meet at Sailors Cove Retreat, obtain boat decal, settle in
If you are planning on parking your boat in one of the slips that comes with the property, you will need to obtain a boat decal from the Bernard’s Landing office (which is right down the road) before 5PM, or call 540-719-1041. Decals are 10 dollars a night for guests. This is about the time where you settle in, test out your sore muscles on that new king-sized bed, and explore your new weekend home.

4:45PM-6:00PM - Dinner
Depending on your group’s budget, you can either finish up that pre-made food from earlier, or you can check out some of the restaurants on Bernard’s Landing. Places like Napoli By the Lake are going to be a bit more on the pricey side, but it’s conveniently within walking distance from the Airbnb. Another good dinner option that’s slightly more budget friendly is Los Amigos Bar and Grill which is only about a 6 minute drive from Bernard’s at Crazy Horse Marina. It could also be fun to take the boat out to the marina and park it in one of the slips while you eat.

6:00PM-8:30PM - Rope swing and sunset views
Being on the lake is all about being on the water. That being said, what better way to spend the remaining daylight hours than a rope swing and beautiful sunset views? Most visitor’s guides or websites won’t advertise little known spots on the water like the rope swing, but the location is a great way to end a long day. A simple google search should be sufficient, but the best way to find it is to head straight to Smith Mountain Gap where the dam is. Once there, hang a right and hug the shoreline with the mountains on your left for a half mile until you see it. Once there, just weigh anchor and have fun! During the summer months, the sun generally sets between 8:15 and 8:40, so this should make for a beautifully serene boat ride back to the condo.

8:30PM-9:30PM - Head back to the Sailors Cove Retreat and wind down
After a short trip back to the Airbnb, it’s time to get cleaned up and change into your favorite hoodie. It wouldn’t hurt to steal a late night snack while you’re at it!

9:30PM - Play a game with friends
Be sure to choose a game that doesn’t take too much brain power. Some of my personal favorites include: Snake Oil, Apples to Apples, Balderdash, and Cards Against Humanity. Whichever game you pick, the goal is low mental energy, high Serotonin levels.

11:00PM - Stargaze
Not only is Bernard’s Landing far from any kind of light pollution, it also has a lush wide open grassy field making it the perfect place to spread a blanket and lie on the ground to stargaze.

11:30PM - Bedtime
You’re gunna be sore tomorrow, so better make sure you get some sleep!

SATURDAY

9:30AM - Breakfast at SML Coffehouse
Depending on how much your group is willing to spend on gas for the boat, either drive or boat over to Bridgewater Marina for breakfast at SML Coffeehouse. You can park the boat on the far right in any of the uncovered boat slips temporarily while you eat. This restaurant has won awards, and their customer service is top notch!

11:00AM - Fuel up and motor down to Bird's Island
Grab some gas from the dock pump (if you chose to drive the boat to get breakfast) and motor down the channel to Bird’s Island. It’s almost due south of channel marker R6 about a half mile, and approximately a half mile east of Vista Point Resort. It would be an understatement to say that the views of the mountains from this island are stunning. At sunset, the view of Vista Point is also incredible. Because of the location on the lake, the water here is also extremely clear. If you’re lucky, you’ll get the entire island to yourselves.
Be careful though, do NOT touch any of the foliage on the island! Most of it is poison ivy, and this would be an excellent way to ruin your vacation. But the island has plenty of open space with paths through the trees.

11:30AM - Wakeboard and tube
This island acts as a perfect hub for people who want to relax and swim around while another group goes and rides in the boat. This part of the lake has plenty of wide open coves perfect for all kinds of watersports.

1:00PM - Home cooked lunch
At this point, I’m sure your group will have a good idea of what they want to eat. Whether the move is to head back to the Airbnb and whip up some sandwiches, or to stop in at a place like Los Amigos, just make sure the whole group is happy with the decision!

3:00PM-5:15PM - Whatever your heart desires!
Part of being on vacation is not always having a plan. Ask your group what kind of vibe they’re feeling and go from there!

5:15PM - Head back to Bridgewater Marina
You now have 45 minutes to return the boat. On the way back, be sure to drop someone off at the car so that they can drive over and meet up with you at the marina.

6:00PM - Fuel up, return the boat, and regroup
You are required to return the boat back to the marina fully fueled. That being said, around this time, the line of boats on the water gets pretty long. Take precautions and throw out your bumpers in case your boat drifts a little too far. After the return process is complete, have everyone regroup and return to your vehicle.

7:00PM - Dinner at Drifters
One of the most famous spots on the lake for dinner is Drifters SML. Whether you like seafood, chicken wings, tacos, or burgers, this restaurant literally has something for everybody. Did I mention that the vibe here is immaculate? You’ll most likely spend hours here without even realizing it! Too bad you already returned the boat because you can even park in one of the uncovered slips and come straight from the docks! Next time maybe?

9:30PM - Movie night!
Phew! You’ve had a long weekend. How about you all treat yourselves to a movie night back at the crib?

11:30PM - Sleep
From my experience, the movie never gets finished. One by one, people start fading until finally the credits roll to the sound of peaceful snoring and the sight of a group of sun burnt and sore friends. Don’t worry, check out isn’t until 11:00AM tomorrow, so enjoy your slumber, you’ve got plenty of time!
